Can someone help me find a book? Can't remember author or title!!?

I remember all the characters - there was an orphan girl called Lily or maybe Lilly/Lillie!, adopted by a bloke called Black Jack, who was a rich widower with two children, Jon and Margaret. Lily grows up with this family, in love with Jon and they marry. Jon goes off to war - later Lily marries a bloke called Brock. I think she has a child who drowns or maybe he saves someone from drowning. Sorry the details are sketchy!! She has a mother called Rose who abandoned her, and she hates the smell of freesias. It is set in Leeds, UK. Does anyone know this book?

"Student Researcher is easy to use, fast, and offered me everything I needed, just type the "Author's" name and or the "Title" into the search engine. You can type in a “Key” word or two, that will help also.

Reply:I, too, thought the plot of the book sounded like a good read. Thank goodness someone found the title. Here's the book jacket blurb:

"Promises

(1982)

A novel by

Catherine Gaskin

A magnicicent saga of a woman's promise and the passion, tragedy and triumph that it brings. Black Jack Pollock inherited a fortune and married a beautiful, wild aristocrat. Shrewd, tough and unscrupulous, he was the last man to take pity on the bedraggled waif who was crushed beneath his carriage wheels. He took her home to Pelham Langley, his great house on the Yorkshire Moors. He named her Lally Leeds and she became the cornerstone of his motherless family. She was companion and friend to the lovely, wilful Margaret; she was the kindest support to the enchanting but handicapped Alice; and she was the greatest admirer of the beloved Jon - Black Jack's son and heir. Throughout the sunlit summer of 1914 the gilded Pollock family were the toast of the town. Only Lally felt unattractive and without a name - the ugly duckling. World War 1 took the young men off to the trenches. It took Lally too, crushed but unsurprised by Jon's marriage, off to France as a VAD. It was she who first met Brock Weymouth, the dark stranger who was to play such a vital role in the Pollock family's affairs - a man with as little right to his name as Lally had to hers. PROMISES sweeps from the agonies of World War 1 to the Jazz Age that followed, from the parties and rich life of Long Island society to the severity and bitterness of the Depression, through the tragedy and disaster to the ultimate and unexpected triumph and the new destiny of Pelham Langley."

While having fun trying to locate the title of your book, I got caught up reading an 1860s book, Beulah, by August Evans.

Happy reading!
Reply:i have no idea wut you are like talking bout!!! but if you do find it out like tell me, it sounds good!!!
Reply:Is it the UK version of "Pride and Prejudice"? Maybe if you visit the library and ask the librarian about that novel, she might pick several titles for you.
